Thicker than water

چکیده
close-up view of a clot forming in human blood shows beautifully how the different blood components are crammed into the plasma. (The scanning electron micrographs have been coloured to emphasize the different structures.) Red blood cells (red) are entangled with the fibrin (yellow) that makes up the scaffolding of the clot. The platelets (blue) — which initiate clotting — are fragments of larger cells called megakaryocytes. The inset shows the rough surface of a T lymphocyte (orange), which can kill infected cells or activate other cells of the immune system.

Rubber Friction in Aqueous Solutions Containing Ions
Lubricants ordinarily operate by keeping two sliding surfaces separated. The efficiency of a lubricant may be expressed by equations of hydrodynamics where the mechanical properties of the films of lubricants are adequately defined by the properties of bulk lubricant. In the case of water lubrication of black rubber at slow speeds and low pressures the lubricating ability of water is shown to b...
متن کاملWater Conservation in Kalanchoe blossfeldiana in Relation to Carbon Dioxide Dark Fixation.
The succulent Kalanchoe blossfeldiana v. Poel. var Tom Thumb was treated on long and short photoperiods for 6 weeks during which short day plants developed thicker leaves, flowered prolifically, and exhibited extensive net dark fixation of carbon dioxide. In contrast, long day plants remained vegetative and did not develop thicker leaves or exhibit net carbon dioxide dark fixation. When examine...
متن کاملBlood is Thicker Than Water
This article introduces a new dataset of historical family characteristics based on ethnographic literature. The novelty of the dataset lies in the fact that it is constructed at the level of the ethnic group. To test the possibilities of the dataset, we construct a measure of family constraints on women’s agency from it and explore its correlation to a number of geographical factors.
متن کاملStresses generated in cooling viscoelastic ice shells: Application to Europa
[1] A cooling viscoelastic ice shell overlying an ocean develops stresses due to two effects: thermal contraction of the ice due to cooling and the expansion of the shell due to the ice-water volume change. The former effect generates near-surface compression and deeper extension; the second effect generates extension only. In both cases, stresses are smaller at depth due to viscous creep. The ...
متن کاملAnatomical, histological and histomorphometric study of the intestine of the northern pike (Esox lucius)
Background: The northern pike Esox lucius is a fresh water species belonging to the Esocidae family. It is a carnivorous fish which mostly feeds on invertebrates and fishes. The morphology of its intestine is very useful for understanding the fish’s digestive physiology, diagnosing some intestinal diseases and formulating suitable feeds. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine the anat...
متن کاملIn Vitro Ion and Water Movement in Corneas of Rainbow Trout.
Cation concentration and water content were determined in the normal rainbow trout cornea, aqueous humor, lens, and vitreous humor. Anatomically the rainbow trout cornea possesses a thicker epithelium and a more prominent Bowman's membrane than those found in mammalian corneas. Descemet's membrane and the endothelium appear more primitive than their mammalian counterparts. In vitro, the cornea ...
